I get to see my son learn and grow in real-time. Time slows down when it is just him and I; he leads the way and something ordinary like the backyard becomes the Amazon jungle or Gobi desert. I get to see his imagination spark and flow in ways no longer possible for an adult. I get the serious, yet awesome, responsibility of nurturing his curiosity and joy into passions worth pursuing.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My passion for fatherhood spawns from my Dad’s love for me. Many of the opportunities and blessings in my life came from his sacrifice. He forewent early retirement, fancy cars, and a mansion to instead pay for my schooling, care for his in-laws, and bless others with his time and money. My father put it simply, “you do something because it’s the right thing to do”. I strive to be the best dad, especially when it’s tough, because it’s the right thing to do.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would donate a portion to my local church and an organization like Big Brothers and Big Sisters. My faith directly informs my understanding of fatherhood. Further, organizations that provide role models for kids without any are invaluable. Lastly, the remaining cash would be used to pay bills, take the family out, and contribute to my son’s 529 savings plan. I want my son to never have to worry about student loans, just like my dad ensured for me.
