It’s watching my boys grow and become individuals. I try my best to teach them how to be good humans, knowing that a lot of what I’m teaching them I learned from my dad. He passed when they were young so they never got the chance to know him. But when I’m teaching them life things or showing them how to fix or build something with their hands, it feels like he’s teaching them, just through me. Getting to pass that down and watch it stick with them is probably the best part of all this.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My dad passed before I was able to thank him for the sacrifices he made and everything he taught me. He was the guy people went to for help, and he always helped. Teaching and coaching in Chicago has shown me how much kids struggle without a dad in their daily life. I’ve had to step up as that role model for students more times than I can count, and it reminds me not to take my own relationship with my boys for granted. I strive to be everything for them that I know some kids are missing.
How would you use the $25,000?
I’d use it to buy back time. Time to actually be present with my boys instead of running between jobs just to keep everything afloat. I’d also put part of it toward getting more kids involved in sports and activities, especially ones who could use a role model showing up for them. I see that need every day through teaching and coaching, and it means a lot to be that person for them.
