I always thought the most rewarding part of being a Dad would be what I would be able to pass down and teach to my son, but I was wrong. The most rewarding part is what I learn everyday from my son. He teaches me to be patient, reminds me to be kind to myself, and encourages me to reunite with my inner child daily. He and I are the best of friends, and it's because we've found a way to have and sustain a reciprocity that is hard to find in a father-son relationship.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I had a difficult journey with my own father growing up. As an immigrant who grew up poor, who struggled with his own identity, mental health and suspected neurodivergence, he didn't have the tools to be the dad that he could have or wanted to be. He and I have a cordial but complicated relationship today, but it isn't enough to merely be a "better" dad to my son than he was to me, but to leverage the pain and trauma that exists between us to be the best person that I can be to him and myself.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would use the 25,000 to put into my son's 529 plan. As he is on the spectrum, my wife and I want to provide him with everything he needs to be safe, supported and to be able to expand into his full potential!
