The most rewarding part is catching my own habits in my kids. Habits are caught, not taught. I walked past my daughter's room and heard her singing along to Oceans, worshiping by herself with nobody watching. My 5 and 7 year old boys head out to the garage gym after dinner and load plates on the squat rack so they can mimic tricep pulldowns on the cable. I never told them to do that. They watched us work out and copied it, and it keeps me honest about what I model when I think nobody is looking!
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
So much of the brokenness I see in our world traces back to fathers. Some were gone. Most were in the house but never actually present... too busy to play and never safe to talk to. I gained three of my four kids through marriage, and I decided early on that none of them would ever wonder where they stand with me. The tagline of my life is make disciples that make disciples. My daughter is learning what to expect from a husband by watching how I treat her mom. My boys are learning how to be one.
How would you use the $25,000?
My wife and I are looking at a 5 acre plot near us listed at $250,000. The $25,000 would be 10% down on that land. We started a ministry called The Discipled Home, and we want to build the literal version of it. A house for our family, and eventually a second house on the property for my mom and stepdad, with a courtyard where everyone hangs out. We want farm animals, a garden, and room for our kids to actually be kids. Our fourth is due any day now, so we're building for a full house!
