I like the feeling of building future healthy adults. Teaching them about nutrition, making sure they are busy with sports and activities, encouraging them to read every night, and gradually building their independence. There was a day last spring when Margot was in a musical, Genevieve's AAU basketball team won a tournament, and Chandler ran three events in the middle school track jamboree. I took a photo of all three together in their event t-shirts and just thought "this is 3 kids thriving."
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
It's the first time in my life I have no doubt what my purpose is. I used to be all about my career, my goals (I'm an Ironman, marathoner, etc) or my adventures. When I become a dad it became my reason for quitting alcohol, for getting up early, for building my days and weeks around them. I'm very cognizant of how fleeting it is: I know in a few years they will launch and be on their own. I try to maximize the + impact I can have on them now, teach them as much as I can, travel as much as we can
How would you use the $25,000?
We would travel together. I've taken them to two National Parks; I would love to explore more. The beauty of being a teacher is I get my summers with my kids, and I don't take it for granted. I'd love to rent a camper and take them on a National Parks road trip. I always tell my students that the world is a book, and if you never travel you're only reading one chapter. It would be amazing to take a summer trip together while they are the ideal age to experience it as a family (9, 11, and 13).
