With my daughter having autism, I’ve found rewards in things that might seem unusual to fathers of neurotypical children. The joy I get from listening to her speak, when just two years ago I didn’t know if she would ever be verbal, is something I can’t put into words. Or the look she’s given me since she was little and couldn’t speak—a look that became our own little language, just between me and her. But the best reward is hearing her laugh. There’s no other feeling like it in the world.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I strive to be the best dad because my daughter deserves nothing less. Children don’t ask to be born, so it’s our job as parents to be the best we can be for them. My daughter goes to quite a few medically necessary services and therapies each week, and that’s a lot to ask of a child. The least I can do is give her my very best, too.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would use the money for my little girl—to help cover her future medical services as well as the services I’ve already taken on debt to provide for her. It would significantly ease the financial burden of her required therapies and services. As a stomach cancer survivor, I know firsthand that life can change unexpectedly. Any money left over would go toward her future, creating savings for her so that if I’m ever not here to take care of her, I can still find a way to provide for her.
