Having relationships with my kids and watching them grow and change with time is great. Both my kids are in their 20's. It's so interesting to watch them start to figure life out. They still come to me, a lot, for advice, money, encouragement--but I can talk to them about stuff too. All the love from when they were young is still there, but there is now a growing friendship with each of them that's great to experience. It's a natural progression that replaces the joy and wonder of their youth.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I strive to be the best dad I can because it matters so much. Life is hard. We all need people in our corner. My wife and I made the choice to bring our children into the world, so it seems only natural that we would do all we can to help them be their best. That doesn't always happen in families, which is nuts because these are your people! Your kids spend so much time when they are young just watching you behave. You are their first model for basically everything before they go off and live.
How would you use the $25,000?
2 ways. First, my son is a senior in college. He is studying film. He's pretty stressed about getting the funding for his senior thesis film. Whatever he doesn't raise, some of this money will make up the difference. Second, we will use the rest for a downpayment on a piece of land to build our retirement house. I want to build it-not hire a contractor-I want to do the work. I have wanted to build my own house for a long time (my wife thinks I'm nuts). Even if it takes a while, that's the dream.
