As my kids have grown up, its been so rewarding to see them come into their own. As my role changes from "parent" to friend/mentor, the conversations and time together have shifted and have become so rewarding. I loved hearing about all they discovered when they were 4 and at 10 and now at 20 and 17 respectively. We enjoy spending time together, its never been a "dread".
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
If I dont strive for it and be open about my struggles, joys and journey, then how will they know or understand its ok to have ups and downs. Theyre all simply a chapter in their story, its not the end. I made it a goal to (try) and demonstrate manhood in the healthiest way possible. I apologized to them when I was wrong, I tell them regularly that I love them. I listen to their opinions. As I have pursued VA health care for treatment I have been honest. If theur dad is open, they can be too.
How would you use the $25,000?
If i were to get something just for me, it would be my truck. But we have some bills. My daughter graduates high school this year, so we'd like to take a family trip "somewhere tropical" (as my daughter says), which is getting harder and harder the older they get. And I'd head over to Ace Hardware and finally get a new lawnmower.
