At 38, I’ve had the privilege of being a father figure to 6 children, ages 7 months to 24. My sons are 16, 15, and 7 months, and my stepson is 16. At 26, I temporarily took in my then-14 yr old & 2 yr old cousins during a difficult time. My 16-yr-old son has cerebral palsy and has exceeded every doctor’s expectation. Watching each of them overcome obstacles the world said they couldn’t, and hearing how my influence helped shape them is my greatest reward.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My firstborn entered this world fighting for his life, suffered brain damage at birth, and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Watching him live without abilities many take for granted changed how I see life. He taught me that being able is a superpower. I’ve carried heavy burdens and pushed through financial hardships to be there for my children. If they, or any child, ever need me, I’ll always find a way, because I am able.
How would you use the $25,000?
My 16 year old son, who has special needs, has a passion for lawnmowers and cutting grass. Everyone who knows him knows how much he loves it, and his dream is to work in landscaping. If awarded $25,000, I’ll use it to launch a nonprofit landscaping company that employs young adults with special needs. I also want to create content around my son’s work to generate income, build his confidence, and show the world what he’s capable of and what he’s always loved to do.
