Travis is ten and Liam is seven, and the best part is they talk to me like grownups. Real conversations about money, hard days, and what they want out of life. My wife works full time, and I'm the one who's here. I make the lunches, cook every dinner, and put them on the bus at six a.m. and I'm there when it comes back. Every morning and night I tell them they're amazing and they can do anything they set their minds to. Watching them start to believe it is the reward.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I'm a disabled veteran. I know how fast life can change, so I don't miss anything. We play baseball in the yard and Fortnite on the couch. I'm teaching my boys how to work hard and make smart money decisions before they're old enough to need to. Some days wear me down, and that's what makes the good ones beautiful. I used to think I gave up my dreams for my family. Then I realized my family is my dream.
How would you use the $25,000?
Some go to our church, because that's what you do when something good happens. Some to pay off debt, which would take a real weight off my wife. And a few thousand each into investment accounts for Travis and Liam. Their schooling is covered through my service, so this would be for after: a first car, a start on something of their own. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it takes away stress, and less stress means more of me for them.
