Experiencing the world through a fresh set of eyes, like when my boys see a groundhog or a cow. To me, it’s another animal, but to them it’s as exotic as a giraffe. I’d also say seeing them pass milestones. General things like first steps, but more niche things like when they start developing personalities; e.g. what annoys them or makes them laugh, what jokes they like to tell, what games they love and the games they hate, etc.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
While my dad was present for my early years, we never really connected and were not similar. He was very athletic and sports-focused, and that led to a lot of conflict because I wasn’t an athlete. I feel like, after all these years, I hear my friends and others talk about how they go to their dads for questions or advice, and I don’t have that with my father. I want to have the exact opposite life experience with my boys, and that requires my best effort.
How would you use the $25,000?
I’ve got investment accounts for my boys that I contribute what I can to, so they can start their adult lives with the nest egg that I (and most) didn’t have, so I’d take at least half and split that up between their accounts. The other half would buff us up economically, and some of that would go into a vacation we haven’t been able to take in a while; it’s cliché, but my wife wants to use her first paycheck (after school), to take the boys to DisneyWorld, so it’d probably be that.
