I’ve spent 20+ years running toward emergencies for strangers, but the most rewarding part of being a dad is having my kids run toward me. To the city, I’m a hero in uniform. To them, I’m a hero in the doorway after a shift. Saving lives is what I’m trained for, but being the calm in my kids’ world is the greatest work I’ll ever do. On duty, I respond to every alarm with uncertainty. At home, I respond to little voices: “Daddy, watch this.” “Daddy, I need you.” with certainty and a smile.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My kids don’t see a Marine or a fire captain, ranks and titles fade. They see Dad loving their mom, keeping his word, and showing up every day. That’s what they’ll carry. I’m writing the blueprint my son will follow and setting the standard my daughter will expect. Every fire leaves a mark, and fatherhood is no different. The mark I leave on my kids will outlast every uniform I’ve ever worn. So I give them my best. Because they deserve a hero at home, not just one the city gets to borrow.
How would you use the $25,000?
First responders put their lives on the line every shift, but the paycheck never matches the sacrifice. 75% would start college funds for my kids, so their futures aren’t limited by what a uniform pays. The other 25% is a donation from the heart to Uniform Families Foundation, the nonprofit my family founded to serve the families of firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement, medical staff, and military. I’ve protected my city my whole career. This lets me protect the families behind it.
