The most rewarding part is watching my kids grow into their own person. Seeing Sophia’s work ethic as she heads off to college, Jesse James’ dedication to basketball, and how strong and determined Kenedee has become. They’re all completely different, and I love that. As a dad, you spend years trying to guide them and teach them right from wrong. Then one day you step back and realize you’re watching these beautiful souls become amazing people of their own.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My biological father gave up his rights to me when I was young, and my stepdad stepped in and showed me what a dad was supposed to be. I became a dad at 19, the same age my biological father did. I remember sitting in that hospital room holding my child and telling myself I was going to be different. No matter how hard life got or what I had to sacrifice, my kids would never have to question whether their dad was going to be there. That’s a promise I’ve tried to live by ever since.
How would you use the $25,000?
I lost my job in May, and this has been one of the hardest financial seasons I’ve faced as a dad. With Sophia starting college, we’ve had to make this summer really tight just to save for tuition. I’d use the money toward her tuition, school clothes for my kids, and bills that have piled up. I’ve had sleepless nights wondering how I’m going to make the next week work. $25,000 would take this weight off my chest, give my family room to breathe, and let me focus on getting us back on our feet.
