The most rewarding part of being a dad is learning what becomes a core memory for my boys. It’s not always the big trip or “dad speech.” It’s the little things like being kind to a cashier, complimenting a stranger, or letting someone have the last ice cream cone. When my boys remember those moments, I’m reminded they’re always watching. Knowing those little moments may help shape the men they become is the greatest reward of being their dad.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I tell parents I train that our goal should be to become better parents than our parents were. You could have had Mr. Rogers as a dad, and you should still try to be better. I may not always succeed, but that goal pushes me to be a better father than I was yesterday. My boys tell me I’m a good dad, but I tell them I expect them to be even better dads someday. If they are, I’ll know I did something right.
How would you use the $25,000?
I’d use the $25,000 to create more opportunities for my boys to experience life with me. Not just a big vacation, but adventures, ballgames, road trips and ordinary days that somehow become core memories. I’d also put some away for their futures. As a dad, I’ve learned that I can’t predict which moments they’ll remember forever, but I can make sure I’m there for as many of them as possible!
