I grew up working in our family hardware and bike shop, learning from my dad and grandfather. Today, having three generations together in the driveway working on our car is unbeatable. Seeing my 11-year-old grab the jack to pull a wheel off, or watching my 9-year-old jump into a chore without fear, is the best part. Whether it is turning a wrench or helping me cook dinner, watching them figure out how to solve problems on their own makes every tough day worth it.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I fail plenty as a dad. I yell more than I should, and I don't always get it right. But I want my boys to be independent and good men. To me, that means courage, confidence, and courtesy. Having the confidence to ask a question, the courage to hear an answer you don't like, and the courtesy to accept it with grace. I keep pushing myself so they learn it is okay to make mistakes, as long as you stay kind, be willing to apologize, take care of your home, and never fear getting your hands dirty.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would take my boys to Japan and South Korea. First, we would eat as much fresh sushi in Japan as humanly possible, because they are obsessed with it. Then we would head to Korea so they can experience their mother's ancestral homeland in person. Teaching them how to use tools and pull weeds at home builds their confidence, but seeing the world and connecting with where their family comes from will shape who they are for the rest of their lives.
