Watching my babies grow into young adults and build successes of their own is incredibly rewarding. But I think it means even more when I see them avoid some of the mistakes we made, not because they had to learn those lessons the hard way, but because they learned from us. There’s something pretty special about watching your children go farther because they were able to start with some of the lessons it took you a lifetime to learn.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I strive to be the best dad I can be because, at the end of my life, what I accomplished won't matter nearly as much to me as who I helped my children become. I don't always get it right, but if they can learn from my successes, skip some of my mistakes, and become better parents and people than I was, then I did something worthwhile with my life.
How would you use the $25,000?
When our kids were young, we tried to give them everything we didn’t have growing up. As they became adults, we realized the greater gift was teaching them everything nobody taught us about building a successful life. With three kids in college and one planning a wedding, I’d invest the $25,000 back into them, education, a strong start in marriage, and opportunities to build their futures. What better use for an award for fatherhood than investing it in the people who made me a father?
