What's the most rewarding part about being a dad?

The most rewarding part is the certainty in Brantley’s heart that his dad will always show up. After his mother and I divorced, I drove at least seven hours each way from North or South Carolina to Kentucky every month—often multiple times—even for only a two-day weekend. After his mother died, that promise became even more important. Seeing him laugh, dream, climb onto my chest, and feel safe enough to be a child tells me every mile, sacrifice, and difficult choice was worth it.

Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?

Brantley learned far too young how suddenly life can change. On Allison’s 36th birthday, he called and said his mom wasn’t breathing while I was away finishing my Army medical board. When I learned she was gone, my knees hit the pavement. I started the process over, gathered statements from doctors, psychiatrists, and teachers, and fought for compassionate reassignment because staying in Kentucky was in his best interest. He lost his mother; he would never wonder whether his father chose him.

How would you use the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to build lasting stability for my son, Brantley, as I medically retire after 25 years of service in the U.S. Army. Since losing his mother unexpectedly in 2024, I have carried the responsibility of being both parents while helping him heal and feel secure. I would pay down debt, establish an emergency fund, handle essential needs for our home, and set aside money for his future. More than anything, it would give us room to breathe as we begin this next chapter together.
