I became a father at 22, while I was still learning how to become a man myself. Today, my greatest reward is seeing the relationship I have with my daughters. They are grown, yet they know there is no hour too late and no situation too difficult to call Dad. During a major ice storm, one of my daughters was without power, and I risked the dangerous roads to get to her. That's fatherhood to me. At 22, I couldn't have known what kind of father I'd become. Their love and respect tell me I’m Super!
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
Because I know what it feels like to have people look at your past and decide who they think you'll become. I was a troubled teenager with encounters with law enforcement. I started college but never finished. My life could have followed a very different path. Instead, I became a father, husband and eventually a respected leader responsible for dozens of professionals. I want my children to see that your beginning does not determine your ending. Integrity, accountability, faith, hard work does.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would invest it in the vision my wife and I share: opening Divine Peace of Mind Child Care, a medical day center for children like our son Kason. Fostering and adopting a medically fragile child changed our family and showed us how difficult it can be for parents to find safe, dependable care while they work and provide for their families. Winning wouldn't just reward me for being a dad—it would help me take what fatherhood taught me and use it to make life better for other families.
