The most rewarding part is the moment Ophelia realizes her voice matters. I don’t speak to her like she’s less because she’s young. I ask what she thinks, tell her the truth, and give her room to make choices. That trust has given us a bond I treasure: we play, explore, laugh, and talk about real life. Watching her grow into a thoughtful, confident person, and knowing she never has to wonder whether Dad has her back, is the greatest reward of my life.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My daughter gets only one childhood. I survived addiction, homelessness, and depression, then rebuilt my life so she could see that the worst chapter never has to be the last. When concerns arose about her well-being, I left the life I had built in Indiana, moved back to Ohio, and temporarily moved in with my parents so I could be close enough to show up. I don’t need to be a perfect father. I strive to be the one who listens, keeps his word, tells her the truth, and chooses her every time.
How would you use the $25,000?
I recently moved back to Ohio and into my parents’ home so I could be closer to my daughter. I would use the $25,000 to build a stable life near her: buy a safe, reliable car, secure a modest home with a room of her own, and cover the legal costs of pursuing more parenting time. This money wouldn’t buy her love, I already have that. It would remove the practical barriers between us and help give her what every child deserves: a present father and a safe place that always feels like home.
