The most rewarding part is hearing the way my kids talk about me. When my 5-year-olds twins tell a friend, “My dad is on YouTube! He makes us music and plays with us,” you’d think I was part of the Marvel Universe. To them, I’m larger than life. Not because of what I’ve accomplished, but because of how I show up for them. Hearing how much our relationship means to them reminds me that the little moments matter. And some days, seeing myself through their eyes is healing in ways I never expected.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I’ve been lucky to have an incredible father and many great father figures throughout my life. Coaches, bosses and teachers who gave me guidance at different stages and helped shape the man I am today. I strive to give my kids that same love, support and guidance, while also being there for others who may look to me for it. Fatherhood to me is bigger than my own home. It’s paying forward what was given to me and being a father, mentor and provider wherever I can.
How would you use the $25,000?
I’d give $2,500 each to Marina Library to grow Dad’s Read with new equipment, books and activities; MY Museum of Monterey, a place my kids and I love and that has given me opportunities to play music and create, for father-daughter programming; and my 1,000 Books initiative to hire an editor and turn more children’s books into free animated read-alongs on YouTube. I’m 12 books in with 988 to go! The final $10,000 would be invested in the people who inspire it all—my kids and my wife.
