The most rewarding part of being a dad is also the hardest: helping my children become independent and grow into adults who no longer “need” me. Watching them through each stage of life has been the greatest privilege of mine, but it’s also bittersweet. One day they won’t need me to wake them for school or drive them to activities. I already miss cleaning up their messes and little fingerprints from the TV (I have kept a set on my TV). Those moments were never really messes, they were memories.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I know I am an example for my son of the man, father, husband, boyfriend, and person I hope he becomes. For my daughters, I want to show them what they should expect from the men in their lives respect, kindness, safety, and support. I will never be a perfect dad, but I will always strive to help my children feel safe, supported, healthy, confident, and emotionally strong. If I can give them that, I know I’ve done my job.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would use the money to pay a large portion ($15,000) of my oldest daughters college cost. Then I would use, $5000, to make sure that I took care of the other educaiton and activitiy expensis for my kids. I would use $1000 to take my wife to do something amazing with her. With out her I would never have gotten to experience these joys of fatherhood. The last $4000, I would take the family to do something fun.
