Watching my five kids become their own people. They're 15 to 35 now, and two have children of their own. There's something pretty incredible about seeing the lessons you tried to teach your kids show up years later in the adults—and parents—they've become. I've learned that being Dad doesn't end when they grow up. The job just changes, and somehow it keeps getting better.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
My dad died when I was five. Thankfully, my grandfather and uncles stepped in and showed me what it meant to have good men in my corner. I've carried that with me my entire life. I strive to be the best dad I can because I know how important simply showing up can be. I'm not a perfect dad, and I've never tried to be. I just want my five kids to know that no matter how old they get, Dad will always be in their corner.
How would you use the $25,000?
I'd probably do what dads do—try to stretch it in ten directions. Hurricane Helene damaged our home and truck, and there's still work to be done. My two youngest are also getting close to graduating high school, so their futures are right around the corner. But I'd save some for something we've never really had: a chance to travel together. The Army took me around the world, but I never really got to see it, and neither did my kids. I'd fix what needs fixing, help prepare them for what's next, a
