Watching my seven children become good, capable adults—and now seeing them raise my 13 grandchildren—is an incredible reward. Fatherhood changes as the years pass. Today I get to travel with them, explore national parks, work on projects, cook together, teach the grandkids, laugh with them and sometimes simply listen. The greatest reward is realizing that the love, lessons and traditions my wife and I built into our family are continuing into another generation.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
Because being a dad isn't a title; it's a lifelong responsibility and privilege. My children learned from what I said, but even more from what I did. Now my grandchildren are watching too. I want them to know that character matters: keep your word, work hard, serve others, keep learning, forgive quickly and love your family fiercely. I won't always get it right, but I can always show up. If I leave my family anything lasting, I hope it's an example worth following.
How would you use the $25,000?
I'd turn the $25,000 into memories and opportunities for my family, especially my 13 grandchildren. I'd create a "Papa Adventure Fund" to take them exploring—national parks, historical places, museums and experiences that open their eyes to the world. I'd also set aside part for books, education and helping them discover their individual talents. Money eventually gets spent; experiences become stories. I'd want this prize to become stories my grandchildren are still telling their children.
