The reward is realizing my kids don’t need a superhero... which is good, because THAT audition would’ve gone terribly. They need a Dad who shows up. Eight kids have watched me succeed, fail, improvise, burn dinner, fix things, break other things (learning some cool, new 4-letter words along the way), and keep moving when life got heavy. Now I get to watch them do the same... with humor, grit and enormous hearts. The reward... I get to be their dad. Hell of a gig.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
Strive? Cute. Ok, ok.. if I do this job right, someday they won’t need me. Which feels like a pretty RUDE reward for several decades of unpaid labor, but apparently that’s the deal.🤷🏽♂️ I’m raising eight people who will eventually walk into the world without Dad standing beside them. I want my voice to still be in their heads when life gets hard: Be kind. Keep your word. Own your mistakes. Get back up. Call your siblings. And for the love of God, PUT THE SHOPPING CART BACK. Character matters.
How would you use the $25,000?
A vacation? New toys? Have you MET eight kids? That $25K would disappear before we left the parking lot. Truthfully, the last few years have been hard, and some incredible people stepped in and carried us when I couldn’t do it alone. I’d pay them back... even the ones who never expected me to. My kids have watched people show up for us; I want them to watch me show up in return. Around here, “Whittakers pay their debts” means more than money. ...and a pony. We'd buy a bad--ss pony.
