At this point, seeing and being a part of developmental break throughs is the best part of being a father. Carmelo is my son, and evert part of me what I do has him in mind. I lost my career job in Feb ‘25 and made the choice to be an entrepreneur (mortgage agent/real estate consultant) so that I could be the available father that I would like to be. I work harder when Carmelo is not with me because I do no work (outside of receiving phone calls) when I am with him. It is only fair to him.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
I did not grow up with an active father in my life, so I probably over compensate for that missing part of myself. However, it is better to do something, not nothing. I see the errors in my character that I am unable to correct being old, and I would like to try my best to prevent Carmelo from inheriting my negative characteristics without guidance.
How would you use the $25,000?
I would put $15,000 in Carmelo’s RESP, which should double (law of 72) in 12 years at an average return of 6% annually. I would put $5,000 away in a TFSA Carmelo in index funds for when he will eventually require braces. The remaining $5,000 will be used towards educational and sport programs until the cash is utilized and I must start to use my own funds towards extracurricular programs.
