The most rewarding part is the little things. My son ASD Level 2 and was born with bilateral clubfoot, so he's worked hard since day one. Between OT, physical therapy, speech, etc., we celebrate every kind of progress: verbalizing his needs/wants, eye contact, initiating joint attention (IJA), learning to calm his body, and every step he takes on his own. Watching him work that hard, and knowing I helped him get there, is the best part of being his dad.
Why do you strive to be the best dad you can be?
Because he's counting on me. My son doesn't always have the words to tell me what he needs, so it's my job to learn him, pay attention, and keep showing up for every therapy session and every hard day. He works harder than anyone I know just to do things that come easy to other kids, and he never quits. How could I give him anything less than my best? I want him to grow up knowing that whatever he's facing, his dad is right there beside him.
How would you use the $25,000?
Every dollar would go straight to my son. His weekly therapies and ongoing medical care add up fast, and this would let me keep him in everything that's helping him. The rest would go toward the things that make his life better day to day: sensory tools for the home, braces for his feet as he grows, a safe space to play and move, and some set aside for whatever he needs as he gets older. Most of all, it would buy us peace of mind so I can focus on being his dad.
